Progestagens in oestrus management
Progestagen treatments, in form of intravaginal devices releasing progesterone or subcutaneous implants releasing norgestomet mimic the luteal phase of the cycle. To obtain a normally fertile oestrus, the duration of treatment has been set at 10 -12 days.
Mechanism of action
Through the negative feedback exerted by progesterone or progestagen, release of gonadotrophins, and especially the preovulatory peak of LH, is inhibited. Final maturation of the dominant follicle, oestrus and ovulation are blocked. Once the source of progestagen and its effect on pituitary gland are removed oestrus and ovulation occur in time synchronised manner.
